Pfizer bullies governments asking for sovereign assets as Collateral

Bizarre demands in return of Vaccines

pfizer

Amid the Covid crisis, when the world is in desperate need of the vaccine, US-based Pfizer becomes a bully and asks some governments to put up their sovereign assets like Military bases and embassy buildings as collateral for any future legal costs in return of the vaccine.

Government officials from Argentina and another Latin American country, which has signed a confidentiality agreement with Pfizer and so cannot be named, told the Bureau that Pfizer demanded additional indemnity against civil lawsuits citizens might file in relation to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine.

When the talks between the government of Argentina and the CEO of Argentina’s Pfizer began in 2020, the latter refused to pay the compensation for any negligence it makes in future and asked the government to pay instead. After certain negotiations between the two, Argentina agreed to buy an international insurance for potential future cases against Pfizer. However, the company did not stop and in December 2020, it made a demand to the government to put its bank reserves, military bases and embassy buildings as collateral along with a fraud insurance, but the country did not agree this time.

While in Brazil, Pfizer demanded that the government create a guarantee fund and deposit money in a foreign bank account. On January 23, 2021 – Brazil’s Health Ministry put out a statement citing excerpts from Pfizer’s pre-contract clauses.

Pfizer made the following demands:

  1. Brazil waives the sovereignty of its assets abroad in the favour of Pfizer.
  2. Rules of the land be not applied to Pfizer.
  3. Brazil takes into consideration a delay in delivery.
  4. Pfizer is not penalized for delayed delivery.
  5. In case of any side effects, Pfizer be exempted from all civil liabilities.

Pfizer’s deal failed with Brazil also as the government called these clauses abusive.

Pfizer’s German partner – BioNTech was given $445 million by the government of Germany. The US paid Pfizer 2 billion dollars as early as July 2020 for pre-orders. Pfizer is looking at making 15 billion dollars from vaccine sales this year, and is in talks with 100 countries and organizations. On January 22, Pfizer signed an agreement with Covax and committed 40 million doses to poor countries this year.

An excerpt in a press release by the company said, “At Pfizer, we believe that every person deserves to be seen, heard and cared for. That’s why from the very beginning of our vaccine development program, Pfizer and BioNTech have been firmly committed to working toward equitable and affordable access of COVID-19 vaccines for people around the world.”

50-year old Kolkata based doctor leaps to death

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Kolkata based doctor (50) allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 10th floor terrace of her apartment located in Bosepukur Road off the Kasba Connector, on Tuesday 11:30 p.m., despite the desperate attempts of the private guards to save her.

The victim has been identified as Joyita Ghosh, a schizophrenic patient and suffering from several comorbidity. She was living alone in the flat for six years after both her husband and 19-year-old son settled down in Malaysia. The son is now studying in Australia. The doctor had given up on her practice several years ago and was now dependent on her former tenant, neighbors and the local police station to get hospitalized whenever needed.

She had received treatment for a mental condition and had been struggling with her meals and livelihood. Her neighbor, Dr. Biswas, a specialist in a private hospital of EM Bypass , stated that despite calling his husband, he refused to come back and take care of the doctor. He informed that she would ring the bell at odd hours and seek food and money from them. In fact, during lock-down, she also disregarded strict rules which the residents had put in place, however they compromised due to her mental condition. Moreover, she kept on changing her maids constantly which was also a problem for few residents and they had written to Kasba police in charge informing that the victim needed help.

” No organization came forward to help her. We contacted her husband who refused to come over to the city and help her. Finally, about a week ago, her electricity was cut off by the power supply company over non-payment of fees. We kept knocking at doors. My 76-year-old mother even proposed that we fix up her meals through an agency but she refused. It is unfortunate that we could not save her,” Dr. Biswas told TOI expressing grief over the demise.

He added, “No organization came forward to help her. We contacted her husband who  refused to come over to the city and help her. Finally, about a week ago, her electricity was cut off by the power supply company over non-payment of fees. We kept knocking at doors. My 76-year-old mother even proposed that we fix up her meals through an agency but she refused. It is unfortunate that we could not save her.”

DC (SSD) Rashid Munir Khan said, “She had been showing some behavioral peculiarities of late that alarmed the other residents. On Tuesday, around 11.15 am, she managed to climb the parapet on the terrace of the apartment. A resident saw her and began shouting to attract attention. Thus alerted, at least two apartment security personnel immediately reached the terrace to bring her down. By the time they managed to reach her, it was too late and she had jumped off the terrace.”

“She fell on the open parking space on the western side of the complex, lying on her back. She was rushed to the CNMC Hospital in a trauma care ambulance after the Kasba police station was informed. She was declared dead there,” Khan added. Police are still trying to find the reason behind her suicide and giving up on her medical practice. The local police earlier made arrangements to get her admitted at different hospitals for her treatment. An investigating office said, “Ghosh, being a doctor herself, used to rarely cooperate with the doctors treating her and would often intervene in her treatment procedures raising a din if her views were not listened to.”

CII Appreciates Govt. on Second Phase vaccine roll out

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Statement on announcement of next phase of vaccination from Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry

We deeply appreciate the Government’s very timely action to roll out the vaccine to the next phase of beneficiaries. The expansion of the mission through Government and private facilities will greatly speed up vaccine delivery and thereby build confidence among all economic players. The fact that the Government would bear the cost of the vaccines in Government facilities is a bold decision and most heartening for the beneficiaries. We expect the strong economic growth trajectory to further build up in the coming months as a result of this fast-track, comprehensive vaccination process for all the sections of society.

Government has truly unfurled a strategic and well-thought agenda to ensure that vaccination is most effective. We hope that factories and offices too would be able to carry out vaccination for their employees and the wider community at the earliest possible with all protocols and regulations in place to further strengthen the recovery process. After all, vaccination is the best stimulus at this point in time.
