Tamil Nadu’s thirty-five-year-old Dr. Gokulkumar brutally murdered his wife by first slitting her throat and then running his car over her on Friday. In an attempt to flee, he got trapped near Achiruppakkam toll plaza, where his vehicle overturned.

The doctor was rescued by a team of local police who admitted him to a general hospital and found out about the murder.

The police said he also assaulted his in-laws before attempting to escape. He was later arrested and a court sent him to jail.

Gokulkumar, a practicing doctor at a private hospital in Potheri, got married to M Keerthana, an employee at the Human Resource Department at a college Melmaruvathur three years ago. The former had suspected the wife’s fidelity and quarreled constantly upon the same for almost six months, until Keerthana left him and went to her parents’ house in Madurantakam.

Gokulkumar went after her to negotiate on Friday but after some time he took a knife from the kitchen and slit her throat. Hearing the screams of the victim, the parents rushed and got attacked too. The Keerthana tried to escape but Gokulkumar followed her in his car and ran over her. Neighbors heard the screams and came out and along with the family, took the victim to a hospital where she was declared dead.

On the other hand, Gokulkumar hit a median near a toll plaza near Achirappakkam and got trapped. Passersby alerted the police and a team led by inspector Sarvanan rescued him and sent him to Chengalpet GH for treatment. After investigation, the police got to know about the crime and informed Madurantakam police station, where a case got registered against the accused and he was arrested.

Bihar : The autonomous institute, Indira Gandhi of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) will hire private detectives to investigate the private practice of its doctors and will terminate the guilty. The proposal has been accepted by the board of governors headed by Health of Minister Mangal Pandey, on Friday.

The authority took this decision on the view some of it’s doctors might be practicing privately despite claiming NPA, a special kind of allowance for medical professionals occupying the posts in medical services.

Allegedly, a majority of 300 faculty members out of 550 doctors also practice privately in spite of claiming NPA, that constitutes 20% of their salary.

Dr. Niranjan Biswas, director of the IGIMS, said, “It is an open secret that some of our doctors are into private practice, which they are not supposed to. We want to put an end to this practice by taking stern action against those who indulge in it. This is a step in that direction. We need support from the government to enforce it so that the institute can develop as a medical center of excellence in the state.”

He added, “We have assiduously built our reputation over the last few years and are now trying to consolidate it. We have no choice, as we receive 10-20 applications against any positions we advertise. The institute is not prepared to be blackmailed anymore. We will terminate the services of those indulging in private practice.”

According to a media report, IGIMS has not succeeded in penalizing any such doctor since its inception in 1983 but came close to do so in 2014 when its flying squad caught 6 out of its 29 doctor under scanner. Although, the principal secretary, health, gave an assurance of strict action, the culprits still used their influence and were bailed off with a warning.

A couple of senior professors at IGIMS – a urologist and a gastroenterologist – took voluntary retirement in 2014 and 2017 after the confrontation of the administration.

The state government banned private practice across its facilities and paid NPA to its doctors for a limited period of 11 months between March 1, 2000 and February 2001, before withdrawing it.

A team of doctors in Mumbai Hospital gave a fresh lease of life to a 10-year-old girl who had accidentally swallowed a large metallic pin with a sharp end, 2 years ago. A team led by ENT doctors Dr Kshitij Shah and Dr Shalaka Dighe, ably supported by pediatric pulmonologist Dr Sagar Warankar and anaesthesia team led by Dr Pramod Kale performed a successful surgery at the hospital. The patient recovered and was discharged within 48 hours.

2 years ago, Naira Shah (name changed), a 10 –year-old girl from Mumbai accidentally swallowed a metallic pin. An x-ray of the abdomen was done and it failed to reveal the foreign body and everybody eventually forgot about the incident. Her life was smooth until the patient started complaining of dry cough after 1.5 years of sleeping in certain positions. Hence, the patient visited Zen Multispeciality Hospital for further investigations.

“To our utter surprise, an x-ray of the chest revealed a metallic foreign body in the lower airway on the left side. A CT scan of the chest was done to precisely locate the foreign body. After an initial attempt at removal of the foreign body by flexible bronchoscopy, a decision was made to perform a rigid bronchoscopy.” said Dr Kshitij Shah, ENT Surgeon, Zen Multispeciality Hospital, Mumbai

Dr Shalaka Dighe, ENT Surgeon, Zen Multispeciality Hospital, Mumbai, said, “Rigid bronchoscopy is a procedure done to gain access to the patient’s airway using a hollow metallic tube under general anaesthesia. The foreign body was successfully removed without any complications and without an external scar on the body after an hour-long surgery.

“The child was hale and hearty in a couple of hours after surgery. Failure to remove the foreign body via bronchoscopy would mean a very morbid open surgery (thoracotomy) to remove it.” said, Dr Dighe

“For over 1.5 years, Naira (name changed) was fine and did not encounter any problems. But suddenly she started coughing. We panicked, feared Covid and took her to Zen Hospital. We are thankful to Zen Hospital for promptly treating our child and urge other parents like us to keep away sharp or metallic objects like pins or coins from their children,” concluded the patient’s father Sanjiv Shah (name changed).

Our sources says on CORONIL launch attended by the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan which was raised by IMA has created internal battle between the members of the Medical associations.

The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) on Monday by issuing a release has slammed Indian Medical Association(IMA) and said that IMA is making baseless comments on Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan for launching Patanjali’s ‘Coronil’ as a cure for COVID-19.

“Dr Harsh Vardhan attended a programme organized by Patanjali Research Institute to launch their new drug CORONIL  which they have claim has a role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.As per the promoter of the drug, Coronil has received certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP) from Drug Controller General of India (DCGI),” says Press statement by DMA

On Monday IMA issued a statement in which they also mentioned and referred  to the tweet of the World Health Oganisation(WHO) that said “WHO has not reviewed or certified the effectiveness of any traditional medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.”

According to DMA , Dr Vardhan did not promote the drug but only focused on making Ayurveda scientific evidence – based medical system that can complement the other systems of medicine including the Modern System of Medicine.

“IMA which stand against mixopathy has no business to question the methodology of a trial of an Ayurvedic drug. How it was conducted? Where it was conducted ?How many patients were involved is to be seen by the certifying authority and not the IMA.”

The DMA has also mentioned in the statement that Various Past Presidents and Past Office Bearers of DMA have also sent us their strong resentment on the content and intent of letter by IMA.
