A recent report has raised concerns as over 54% of households in Delhi-NCR have been experiencing flu symptoms such as headaches, cough, fatigue, mild fever, and other respiratory issues. The national capital is witnessing a surge in influenza cases, including the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu. According to a survey by LocalCircles, viral illnesses have significantly increased in the region, affecting more than half of the households.
The Rising Cases of Flu in Delhi-NCR
The survey, conducted since February 2025, found that flu symptoms have been more persistent this year, with recovery periods extending up to 10 days instead of the usual 5-7 days. The data was collected from over 13,000 residents across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, with 63% of respondents being men and 37% women.
Besides seasonal flu, there has also been a surge in swine flu cases, putting a strain on healthcare facilities. The symptoms of swine flu closely resemble those of Covid-19, making it difficult to diagnose without testing. Reports indicate that over 20,000 individuals have been infected with the virus in India, with at least 347 deaths recorded as of December 2024. The data was compiled from reports submitted by states and Union Territories to the Central Surveillance Unit, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Delhi.
Expert Insights on the Flu Surge
According to Dr. Vikas Mittal, Pulmonologist and Director at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, C K Birla Hospital, Punjabi Bagh, “Many patients are presenting at OPDs with prolonged upper respiratory symptoms like runny nose, sore throat, and dry cough, which last for more than two weeks. These cases are not responding to the usual flu treatments.”
Dr. Mittal also noted that some cases resemble hyperreactive airway diseases, requiring treatment similar to asthma, including bronchodilators, inhalers, and, in some cases, oral steroids.
Global Flu Statistics
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around one billion cases of seasonal flu occur globally each year. Of these, approximately 3-5 million cases become severe, and between 290,000 to 650,000 people succumb to flu-related complications annually. This highlights the importance of proactive measures to prevent the spread of influenza.
How to Recognize and Treat Flu Symptoms
Dr. Sunita Nagpal, General Physician at Salubritas Medcentre, emphasizes that antibiotics should only be used for bacterial infections and not for viral flu. Overuse of antibiotics in viral infections can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future bacterial infections harder to treat.
For flu treatment, the following measures can help alleviate symptoms:
- For Nasal Congestion – Antihistamines and steam inhalation can provide relief.
- For Sore Throat – Gargling with warm salt water helps soothe irritation.
- For Fever – Antipyretic medications like paracetamol can help reduce fever.
- Hydration – Drinking plenty of fluids prevents dehydration and helps the body recover.
- Rest – Getting adequate rest allows the immune system to fight off the infection effectively.
Preventive Measures to Stay Safe
To reduce the risk of contracting and spreading the flu, it is essential to follow these preventive measures:
- Practice Good Hygiene
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid touching the face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover the mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing to prevent the spread of germs.
- Boost Immunity
- Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
- Stay hydrated and include immune-boosting foods like citrus fruits, ginger, and turmeric.
- Engage in regular physical activity to strengthen the immune system.
- Avoid Crowded Places
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to crowded areas, especially during peak flu season.
- Wear a mask in public places to reduce the risk of inhaling respiratory droplets.
- Get Vaccinated
- Annual flu vaccination can help prevent certain strains of the influenza virus.
- High-risk individuals, such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing conditions, should prioritize getting the flu shot.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While most flu cases resolve on their own with proper care, certain symptoms indicate the need for medical intervention. Seek immediate medical help if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Persistent high fever that does not subside with medication
- Severe dehydration (dizziness, reduced urination, confusion)
- Worsening symptoms after initial improvement
The alarming rise in flu cases in Delhi-NCR highlights the importance of taking preventive measures and seeking timely medical care. While flu symptoms can be uncomfortable, practicing good hygiene, boosting immunity, and getting vaccinated can significantly reduce the risk of infection. If symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional to rule out severe infections like swine flu or other respiratory illnesses. By staying vigilant, individuals can protect themselves and their families from the ongoing flu surge.
