Merck announced on Wednesday a supply and purchase agreement with Singapore that will ensure access to its experimental oral COVID-19 antiviral drug, making Singapore the latest Asian country to seek supplies.

Molnupiravir, the first oral antiviral medication for COVID-19, is designed to introduce errors into the coronavirus’s genetic code. Merck is requesting that the pill be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Singapore’s health ministry confirmed the agreement, but declined to comment on the number of doses purchased due to commercial sensitivities.

According to the ministry, molnupiravir will be available for use after Merck, also known as MSD Pharma in Singapore, submits data to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and obtains approval for use in Singapore.

Sweden and Denmark pause Moderna vax in adolescents

Sweden and Denmark announced on Wednesday that they are suspending the use of Moderna’s Covid vaccine for children under the age of 18 due to reports of rare cardiovascular side effects.

The Swedish health agency announced that the shot would be discontinued for people born in 1991 and later due to an increase in myocarditis and pericarditis. These conditions are characterised by heart inflammation.

“These are typically mild cases, and individuals tend to recover within a short time,” a Moderna spokesman said. Those who contract Covid are at increased risk of developing myocarditis, and vaccination is the best way to protect against this.

“Due to the “precautionary principle,” Denmark has halted the vaccine for those under the age of 18.

A study found that two metres of separation is insufficient without masks: COVID-19

Without masks, the two-meter physical separation rule is insufficient to prevent COVID-19 transmission inside. The study’s findings were published in the journal ‘Building and Environment.’ According to Quebec, Illinois, and Texas, wearing a mask indoors can reduce the contamination range of airborne particles by 67 percent.

“Mask mandates and good ventilation are critically important to curb the spread of more contagious strains of COVID-19, especially during the flu season and winter months as more people socialize indoors,” said Saad Akhtar, a former doctoral student under the supervision of Professor Agus Sasmito at McGill University.

While most public health guidelines prescribe a two-meter physical separation between persons from different houses, the researchers claim that this is insufficient to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Researchers discovered that when people aren’t wearing masks, more than 70% of airborne particles breach the two-meter threshold in less than 30 seconds. When masks are used, however, less than 1% of particles exceed the two-meter mark. The team from McGill University, Universite de Sherbrooke, Texas A&M University, and Northern Illinois University built a computer programme that precisely mimic coughing dynamics in indoor areas, based on models used by scientists to investigate the movement of liquids and gases.

Ventilation, posture, and mask use all had a considerable impact on bio-contaminant dissemination, age and gender had just a minor impact.

Coughing is a common way for sick people to transfer infections into the air. “This study advances the understanding of how infectious particles can spread from a source to its surroundings and can help policymakers and governments make informed decisions about guidelines for masks and distancing in indoor settings,” Akhtar concluded.

Sanofi, a French healthcare business, announced on Wednesday that the first research into a high-dose influenza vaccination with a COVID-19 mRNA booster had yielded good results.

Sanofi stated initial findings from a trial comparing Sanofi’s Fluzone High-Dosage Quadrivalent vaccine to Moderna’s COVID-19 mRNA experimental booster dose revealed that the vaccines had similar immunogenicity responses as well as a similar safety and tolerability profile.

“These positive results could facilitate the implementation of Northern Hemisphere influenza and COVID-19 booster vaccination campaigns, especially in this high-risk population,” said Dr. Michael Greenberg, North America Medical Head for Vaccines at Sanofi.

Junior resident physicians and interns across Karnataka boycotted out-patient department (OPD) and all elective treatments beginning at 9 a.m. on October 7, demanding prompt and regular payment of stipend and COVID-19 risk allowance.

Namratha C., president of Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD), said emergency services, ICUs, and COVID-19 services were not hampered by the strike. “All junior resident doctors assembled in their respective colleges for a symbolic protest. However, all those on emergency duty continued with their regular duties,” she said.

All post-graduate doctors and interns at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) assembled in front of the new OPD complex. The younger residents sought urgent resolution of their concerns, holding banners and chanting slogans. According to Dr. Namratha, around 5,000 young physicians from Karnataka participated in the strike.

“It has been months since the COVID-19 allowance was announced but it is yet to reach us. Umpteen representations were made to the government and administration in the past one year to waive off fees for the year 2021-22 since the past academic year was spent solely on COVID-19 care with close to nil academics and clinical exposure in our chosen specialties. However, there is no response. Instead, the fee has been hiked,” she said.

“We demand that the government restructure the academic fees according to the 2018-19 academic year and immediately sanction funds for COVID-19 risk allowance. Apart from this, we also demand timely payment of stipend to junior resident doctors and interns,” she said.

“As the Minister concerned and officials are out of town, we have submitted a memorandum in the office of the Director of Medical Education (DME). We are trying to meet the Minister in the evening,” she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the country’s healthcare industry on Thursday, saying the government intends to establish at least one medical college in each district.

In his address at an event in Rishikesh, the Prime Minister said, “About 6-7 years ago, only a few states had the facility of AIIMS. Today, work is being done to take AIIMS to every state. We are moving fast from six AIIMS to build a strong network of 22 AIIMS. It is also the goal of the government that there must be at least one medical college in every district of the country.”

Appreciating former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee’s contribution for the development of Uttarakhand, the Prime Minister said, “Atal ji had fulfilled the dream of the creation of Uttarakhand. Atal ji believed that connectivity is directly related to development. Due to his inspiration, today work is being done to ensure connectivity via infrastructure in the country at unprecedented speed and scale.”

“Today the government does not wait for the citizens to come to them with their problems and then take action. We are removing this misconception from the government’s mindset and system. Now, the government goes to the citizen directly to solve their problems,” he said.

The Prime Minister also appreciated India’s ongoing vaccination drive and said, “It is a matter of pride for every Indian that 93 crore doses of COVID vaccines have been administered. Very soon, we will cross the 100 crore mark. India has shown the way to the whole world that by building the Co-WIN platform, one can carry out the vaccination drive on such a large scale.”

“In normal days, India used to produce 900 metric tonnes of liquid medical oxygen a day. As the demand increased, India increased the production of medical oxygen more than 10 times. This was an unimaginable goal for any country in the world, but India has achieved it,” PM Modi added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation 35 Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants established under the PM CARES Fund. The ceremony had begun at 11 am at AIIMS Rishikesh, the PMO’s statement said.

These Lifestyle Habits May Increase Your Chances of Having brain stroke

by Medically Speaking
written by Medically Speaking

Brain strokes pose a serious threat to individuals, and some of our lifestyle choices invite this medical emergency. Before we get into what these lifestyle habits are, it’s important to understand what a brain stroke is. A stroke is a serious condition that occurs when the blood supply to one or more parts of the brain is disrupted. Because of the interruption or delay in blood supply, brain tissue does not receive oxygen and nutrients, resulting in a stroke.

From unhealthy eating to excessive smoking, there are many lifestyle choices that can increase your chances of experiencing a stroke. Researchers at John Hopkins Medicine reveal that taking contraceptive pills can also increase one’s risk of encountering a stroke. The combined oral contraceptive pill and contraceptive patch have the hormone oestrogen, which increases the risk of stroke. The research has highlighted a couple of lifestyle habits that lead to brain stroke:

No Physical Activity

With work from home in place, physical activity has been restricted a lot more. Being inactive with no movement can only make you obese, further inviting a series of major illness. It makes your vulnerable to chronic conditions and increases the risk of strokes. Regular exercise and eating healthy can protect you from all sorts of life-threatening conditions and complications, one as brain stroke.

Smoking

Apart from making your heart health and respiratory functions poor, cigarette smoking makes an individual more prone to strokes. Experts at John Hopkins Medicine have stated that smoking almost doubles the risk for an ischemic stroke.

Binge Drinking

The researchers condemn binge drinking as it can lead to stroke. It is said that more than two drinks per day raises your blood pressure. As per National Health Services (NHS)’s definition, binge drinking refers to drinking lots of alcohol in a short space of time or drinking to get drunk. While for men, 8 units of alcohol in a single session is termed as binge drinking, for women, it is six units.

Medical conditions

Individuals with medical conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, Atrial Fibrillation (AF) are at a higher risk of suffering a stroke. However, these are all controllable risk factors, but family history, age, gender are uncontrollable risk factors.

How is a brain stroke treated?

One needs to act immediately if they see someone suffering with a stroke. In order to treat an ischemic stroke, doctors are advised to quickly restore the blood flow to the brain. However, in case of a hemorrhagic stroke, surgery could be recommended.
