No fresh COVID cases in the last 7 days in 149 districts. 8 districts have reported no new COVID Cases in the last 14 days; 3 districts in last 21 days and 63 districts in the last 28 days, said Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan in a meeting of high-level Group of Ministers (GoM) on Covid-19 through video conferencing.

“More than 3 crore vaccinations have been administered to 60 plus beneficiaries, and more than 9.43 crore doses have been given till 9 am today. India has also supported the global community through Vaccine Maitri, under which 6.45 Crore doses of COVID-19 Vaccine have been exported to 85 Countries. 3.58 Crore doses have been supplied to 25 countries under commercial contracts, 1.04 Crore to 44 countries as grants and 1.82 Crore to 39 Countries under COVAX,” he said.

Through the detailed presentation, it was also pointed out that 11 States together contribute to 54% of the total cases & 65% of the total deaths in the country. Disproportionately higher deaths in Maharashtra and Punjab have further increased during the last 14 days (64% of the total deaths in the country). Starting February 2021, a steep increase in cases observed in all the 11 States. Majority of the cases are reported in the younger population (15-44 years of age) and majority of the deaths reported among the elderly population (> 60 years). A high-test positivity rate is seen in Maharashtra (25%) and Chhattisgarh (14%). He highlighted that in many states the proportion of RTPCR-RAT was not satisfactory, while testing capacity in the private sector is underutilized in many states. Also, feedback from the visiting teams indicate laxity in following Covid appropriate behaviour, containment zone activities and increased social gatherings increasing the number of cases. 

Dr. V K Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog explained the global approach underlying population prioritisation regarding vaccination. The same scientific and evidence-based approach has guided Government of India in its population age groups prioritization for COVID vaccination, he stated. He also detailed efforts to ramp up production of the existing vaccines and also detailed about the potency and timeline of vaccines undergoing clinical trials.

Dr Harsh Vardhan addresses WHO South East Asia on World Health Day

WHO has issued the call to work together, collect reliable data, tackle inequities and act beyond borders, said Dr Harsh Vardhan while addressing the WHO South East Asia Regional Office on the occasion of World Health Day on Wednesday.

“Providing universal health coverage, based upon a strong foundation of primary healthcare services ensures people have access to comprehensive care, ranging from promotive and preventive to treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. India launched its flagship Ayushman Bharat program on these lines, which has two components,” he said.

He added, “The first endeavours establishment of 150,000 Health and Wellness Centres to deliver Comprehensive Primary Health Care while also focusing on health promotion, disease prevention, and multi-sectoral actions for social development in which citizens are active participants. The second component is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana which provides cashless cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care. The assurance of access to secondary and tertiary care for more than 500 million of our citizens is a remarkable step towards equitable provision of healthcare services.”

“India’s ancient philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam’ exalts the entire world as one family. We have always believed in it and our actions reflect the same. As the world increasingly embraces this philosophy, it will expedite our progress towards a fairer and healthier world,” said the Union Health Minister.

We have started a New Chapter in India’s Public Health history: Dr Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi: The Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan virtually launched the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) on Monday in, in the presence of  of Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. Chief Minister Shri Tirath Singh Rawat (Uttarkhand) was also present digitally. The Integrated Health Information Platform  is the next generation highly refined version of the presently used  Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

Expressing his enthusiasm at the brave, futuristic and pertinent amalgamation of healthcare and technology, Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that “This day shall be written in Golden Letters as a day that marks a milestone in the history of disease surveillance. We have started a new chapter in India’s public health trajectory. India is the first country in the world to adopt such an advanced disease surveillance system.” He elaborated on the timely need for the software platform: “The new version of IHIP will house the data entry and management for India’s disease surveillance program. In addition to tracking 33 diseases now as compared to the earlier 18 diseases, it shall ensure near-real-time data in digital mode, having done away with the paper-mode of working”.

Terming this as the world’s biggest online disease surveillance platform, he stated that it is in sync with the National Digital Health Mission and fully compatible with the other digital information systems presently being used in India. The refined IHIP with automated -data will help in a big way in real time data collection, aggregation & further analysis of data that will aid and enable evidence-based policy making, he explained. He applauded NCDC, WHO and all those who have been associated with this development.

Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that IHIP will provide health information system developed for real time, case-based information, integrated analytics, advanced visualization capability. It will provide analyzed reports on mobile or other electronic devices. In addition, outbreak investigation activities can be initiated and monitored electronically. It can easily be integrated with other ongoing surveillance program, while having the feature of addition of special surveillance modules.

Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that such an advanced digital platform for scouting the earliest signs of disease spread in the smallest of villages and blocks in the country will immensely help in nipping in the bud any potential outbreak or epidemic. He applauded the hard work and commitment of all the grassroots and frontline healthcare workers who have toiled the whole of last year during COVID pandemic He stated, “India has shown to the world that even during a pandemic, we are capable of developing such an advanced disease surveillance system.”. He further observed that the platform is a success story of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and a step towards Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s dream of Aatma-Nirbhar Swastha Bharat.

64 million doses delivered to more than 84 nations: Dr Harsh Vardhan

More than 61 million vaccine doses have been administered in our country and 64 million doses have been given to 84 countries, said Dr Harsh Vardhan while addressing the World Immunisation and Logistics Summit on Tuesday.

He stated that development of vaccine was actively and proactively supported by the government; the expert group for vaccine NEGVAC was formed 6 months before their launch which planned each detail of the vaccine, its manufacturing, logistics and administration. Half a dozen of vaccines are under clinical trial and around one dozen vaccines are in pre-clinical trial which are being monitored by the body.

Recollecting the biggest challenges faced by him in terms of rolling out the vaccination programme, the Minister said, “India itself with a huge population of 1.35 billion and huge diversity is a big challenge. We took this challenge head on under the leadership of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. On 17th of January last year, we had issued an advisory regarding COVID long before it snowballed into the crisis it is today. We also developed capacities for testing, ventilators, tracking, surveillance, quarantine centre and emphasized that COVID Appropriate Behaviour is the most potent vaccine against COVID.” After the launch of the vaccines, we prioritized our health care workers, front line workers, the general population aged 45 and above with co-morbidities and those above 60 years of age; and now all those above 45 years. We also planned the opening of 50,000 centres across the country and trained 7 lakh vaccinators for the exercise, he added.

Union Health Minister receives 2nd dose of vaccine

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister, received the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine at Delhi’s Heart and Lung Institute on Tuesday. He said neither of them felt side effects after taking the second dose, reports ANI.

He appealed to people to get themselves vaccinated without hesitation. “There are only a few rare cases wherein people contracted Covid-19 after taking vaccines. Even if someone tests positive after taking vaccines, it minimizes the chances of their hospitalization or admission to ICU wards,” the Health minister said.

“Both Indian vaccines are safe and effective. A lot of people still have doubts regarding vaccines. I urge them not to believe what is being circulated in WhatsApp university,” he added.

Vardhan said that around seven more COVID vaccine candidates are in clinical trials. Some of them are in the advanced phase of the trials. Around two dozen vaccines are in pre-clinical trials.

“There are 430 districts in the country where not a single case of coronavirus has been reported in the last 28 days. The situation is under control but we do not have to be complacent in terms of observing COVID appropriate behavior,” said Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

Union Health minister: 16 AIIMS under different stages of implementation since last 7 yrs.

Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday stated while addressing Rajya Sabha, that a total of 157 medical colleges are under different stages of implementation out of which 58 are undergoing first phase, 24 are in the second and 75 recently announced are under the third phase.

He said, “Besides, there were 50,000 medical college seats in the country till 2014 and after that, in the last over six years, 30,000 additional medical colleges seats have been created. More seats would be added with the setting up of these new colleges.”

“So far, 22 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been sanctioned under the Modi government. Out of these, 16 AIIMS have been in different stages of implementation since the last seven years,” he added.

In response to a question during the question hour with supplementary, the minister said, “under phase 3, four medical colleges have been approved in Karnataka in the year 2019-20 to be establishes at Chikkamangaluru, Haveri, Yadgiri and Chikkaballapura with intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats each.”

He said the medical colleges have been approved at a cost of Rs. 325 crores each to be shared between the Centre and the state government in the ratio of 60:40. The Narendra Modi government, in its second tenure, sanctioned 75 medical colleges in various states of the country. These are preferably in the aspirational districts and areas where the most deprived people live and where there is no medical college either in private or government sector, said Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
