Study suggests GSK’s Covid antibody treatment works against Omicron

GlaxoSmithKline Plc, a pharmaceutical business, said that their antibody treatment for Covid-19 is effective against the whole combination of mutations in the novel strain omicron.

The drugmaker in a statement said the tests done in-vitro against a pseudo-virus that recreates a synthesized version of omicron showed that sotrovimab, Glaxo’s antibody treatment, stands up to all mutations in the spike protein of the omicron variant and not just the key mutations. The tests included all 37 mutations identified to-date in the spike protein.

This come amid uncertainty about whether the new variant omicron erodes the defenses of existing medicines and Covid-19 vaccines — and by how much. Its many mutations, particularly on the spike protein that’s the target of most treatments, have sparked concern globally and spooked financial markets.

Given the less than three-fold drop in neutralization during tests, “we are confident that sotrovimab will continue to provide significant benefit for the early treatment of patients hoping to avoid the most severe consequences of Covid-19,” said George Scangos, Chief Executive Officer of Vir Biotechnology Inc., the drug’s co-developer.

Sotrovimab reduced the risk of hospitalization and death in people with mild to moderate Covid by 79% in trials. The drug won clearance from U.K. regulators this month.

“The 3-fold reduction in sotrovimab’s ability to neutralize omicron in analysis conducted by GlaxoSmithKline’s partner Vir Biotechnology should still mean a substantial level of efficacy vs. the variant — though we have yet to see the details — especially given the potential to dose at higher levels if needed. We continue to expect that the drop in activity for sotrovimab — and that of AstraZeneca’s AZD7442 — will be less severe than that of Eli Lilly-AbCellera and Roche-Regeneron’s antibodies. Glaxo’s 750,000 doses in committed contracts with various governments could equate to $1.5 billion of sales.”

Since it was administered to ex-US President Donald Trump, the Monoclonal Antibody-drug cocktail has gained global attention as a miracle cure for Covid-19, but the initial scientific evidence was insufficient. There were a few studies that demonstrated its efficacy, but no studies on the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 were conducted worldwide.

AIG Hospitals along with the Asian Healthcare Foundation, CCMB Hyderabad, and Institute of Life Sciences, successfully proved that Monoclonal Therapy reduces severe disease and death in high-risk individuals infected with the Delta Variant of SARS-CoV-2 by 100%.

The Delta is the worst variant of the SARS-CoV-2 with higher infectivity, is more transmissible, with a diverse set of mutations than any other variant. In India, the second wave of havoc was caused due to Delta. “The results are astonishing and will shape the public health policy for treatment of Covid-19 especially in high-risk individuals, those above 60 years of age or even below with underlying health conditions including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, pregnancy, chronic diseases, all will benefit immensely. We have clearly demonstrated in our research that when given at the right time, Monoclonal Therapy stops the progression of the disease completely,” said Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman, AIG Hospitals.

After New Antibody Therapy, 2 Covid Patients Discharged From Sir Ganga Ram Hospital In 12 Hours

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi have reported successful use of monoclonal antibody therapy in two Covid-19 patients with fast progression of symptoms within the first seven days.

The two patients, who were administered the REGCov2 (Casirivimab and Imdevimab), designed to produce resistance against the SARS-CoV-2, recovered and were discharged within 12 hours of being given the doses.

A 36-year-old healthcare worker with high-grade fever, cough, myalgia, severe weakness, and leucopenia was administered REGCov2 on day six of the disease, according to the press release of the hospital.

“Patient’s parameter improved within 12 hours and was discharged,” the release added.

Monoclonal antibodies are identical copies of an antibody that targets one specific antigen. This treatment has previously been used to treat infections such as Ebola and HIV.

The second case was of the 80-year-old RK Razdan who was both diabetic and hypertensive and had high-grade fever and cough.

Razdan’s oxygen saturation was more than 95% on room air. Monoclonal antibody and a CT scan confirmed mild disease.

“A CT scan confirmed mild disease. He was given REGCov2 on day 5. The patient’s parameter improved within the next 12 hours,” the hospital said in a statement.

Dr Pooja Khosla, Senior Consultant, Department of Medicine, SGRH, said monoclonal antibody therapy could prove to be a game-changer if used at an appropriate time.

“Monoclonal antibody could prove to be a game-changer in times to come if used at an appropriate time. It can avoid hospitalisation in high-risk groups and progression to severe disease. It can help escaping or reducing the usage of steroids and immunomodulation which would further reduce the risk of fatal infections like Mucormycosis, secondary bacterial and viral infections like CMV,” she said.

LNJP begins monoclonal antibody treatment free of cost

Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital (LNJP) ahad begun Monoclonal Antibody Cocktail used to treat mild to moderate “high risk” patients who are Covid positive, free of cost.

“We have received a Monoclonal Antibody Cocktail– a combination of Casirivimab and Imdevimab. We have started using it in LNJP hospital. Now we will be able to provide the latest medicines for the Covid-19 patients. These are the monoclonal antibodies and they are very useful,” said Dr Suresh Kumar, Managing Director, LNJP hospital”We will have first-time experience of these drug cocktails or antibody cocktails.

Earlier patients were going to the private hospitals to get this treatment, but now the government has made a provision and we are giving it in LNJP. We are giving it free of cost.”Roche India and Cipla had announced the launch of the Antibody Cocktail in India last week.

Priced at ₹59,750 for a dose, the therapy has been earlier introduced in private hospitals Fortis Escorts, Moolchand, Apollo, Sir Gangaram, and Max Hospital.
