India continues to report high spike in the number of daily Covid cases with more than 4 lakh cases reported in the last 24 hours.

In an unfortunate incident, as many as 16 patients of Covid-19 and two nurses died at a hospital in Gujarat’s Bharuch district after a fore broke out in the ICU ward on Saturday.
According to the sources, there were around 27 patients in the ICU at the time of the fire. The locals broke the glass windows and rescued some of the patients who were later shifted to nearby hospitals.
Two senior bureaucrats – Additional Chief Secretary (labour and employment) Vipul Mittra and Commissioner (municipalities) Rajkumar Beniwal – have been appointed by the CM Vijay Rupani to initiate probe into the matter.
An ex-gratia aid of Rs 4 lakh would be given to each of the next of kin of the victims from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, Rupani said, while expressing grief over the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, expressed his condolences, saying, “Pained by the loss of lives due to a fire at a hospital in Bharuch. Condolences to the bereaved families.”
Since last year, the hospital on the Jambusar bypass is being used to treat Covid-19 patients of the district.
Fire department sources said there were around 27 Covid patients in the ICU, some on ventilators. The fire broke out at around 1 am on Saturday.
Fire department officials believed that a short circuit might have led to the blaze when the patients were sleeping. After noticing the fire, the hospital staff tried to rescue the patients who were on ventilators. The locals, after hearing about the incident, also rushed to the spot to help.
Fire tenders, too, reached immediately and controlled the blaze within half-an-hour.
The rescued patients were rushed to private hospitals in Vaghra and Jambusar among other areas.
A Covid patient (42) admitted to PGIMER, allegedly jumped to death from the fourth floor of the hospital on Thursday.
The investigating police stated, “He was Covid-19 positive and under treatment for post-COVID fungal pneumonia. He was adequately treated in RICU (Respiratory Intensive Care Unit) and shifted to a private ward on April 28.”
The Panchkula resident was admitted to the institute on April 11, the officials added.
The patient jumped out of the window of his room on Thursday afternoon, it said.
“Immediately after that he was taken to (PGIMER) emergency, where he was declared dead. The patient was under treatment for anxiety by the psychiatry department,” the statement said.
Surat (Gujarat): 4 out of the 16 critical Covid patients rescued from a fire that broke out in Ayush Hospital’s ICU ward on Sunday night, died on Monday.
The patients were shifted to safer places by the hospital staff before the fire team arrived, said Basant Pareek, In-charge Chief Fire Officer of Surat Municipal Commission (SMC).
The fire broke out after a blast in the air conditioner caused either due to the short circuit or overloading, he said.
Maharashtra: Thirteen Covid patients admitted in the ICU of Vijay Vallabh Hospital of Virar after a fire broke out at around 3 am on Friday.
Dilip Shah, CEO of the hospital told, “Around 90 patients were admitted to the hospital at the time of the incident.”
“21 patients including those in critical condition have been shifted to another hospital,” he added.
PM Narendra Modi called deaths in Palghar district’s Virar “tragic”. The PM has approved an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 Lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of the victims who lost their lives and a sum of 50,000 to those who were seriously injured.
The statement from CMO of Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray mentioned, “He has expressed sorrow over the deaths. He has directed that other patients undergoing treatment should not be harmed and should be relocated immediately. After learning about the fire, the Chief Minister himself has spoken to the concerned officials and asked them to first of all give priority to extinguish the fire completely and ensure that treatment on other patients continues.”
“The cause of the fire should be properly investigated, he also directed the administration to immediately inquire about whether the fore safety was adequate and whether it was a private hospital.”
22 Covid patients died on Wednesday at the Zakir Husssain Municipal Hospital in Maharashtra’s Nashik due to interruption of oxygen supply after leakage in an oxygen cylinder.
The oxygen tanker leaked while being filled at the hospital, said authorities.
The district collector said that the patients who dies were on ventilators as well as on oxygen supply.
Maharshtra government ordered an enquiry, with FDA minister Dr Rajendra Shingane calling it an unfortunate incident.
Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope also said that interrupted supply could be linked to the deaths. He said that the government will look into the matter and conduct a thorough inquiry.
A corona patient admitted in New Medical College Hospital of Kota died allegedly due to lack of oxygen supply on Tuesday.
The superintendent of the hospital, Nilesh Jain said, “We faced a 2-5 minute disturbance due to lack of cylinders resulting in the death of a woman. The amount of pressure to operate ventilator had gone down.”
The state health minister Raghu Sharma on Tuesday requested the Centre to ramp up the supply of medical-use oxygen to the state to meet the heightened demand due to the spike in the number of coronavirus cases.
He said the state has adequate number of beds as of now and can raise the number further up to three lakh, but it needs more oxygen to treat coronavirus patients.
Two doctors, father and son, from Kalyan died due to coronavirus while the mother is serious in a Vasai based hospital. The father and son duo had been involved in Covid care for a year.
The family members were admitted in different municipal corporation areas, reports TOI. While Dr Nagendra (58) was admitted in Thane’s Vedanta Hospital, his son got a private bed in Goregaon. TOI further reports that the mother is admitted in a hospital in Vasai-Virar region.
It is still uncertain if the father son duo received vaccine shots.
A Covid patient died in a hospital in Madhya Pradesh after a ward boy allegedly removed his oxygen support. The deceased was low on hemoglobin and a patient of dialysis.
The kin of the patient wreaked havoc in the hospital of Shivpuri and requested an investigation into the matter.
A team of 3 doctors has been formed by the Superintendent of the Medical College to look into the matter and submit the report within 48 hours following which appropriate action will be taken.
Family is adamant on not cremating the body until justice is served.
‘’ We’ll check CCTV footage and look into the allegations leveled by family,’’ Arjun Lal Sharma, CMHO said.
A Covid-19 patient died after he was allegedly made to wait for one and a half hour at Patna’s Nalanda Medical College & Hospital. The other hospitals did not admit him due to which he came to NMCH.
The son of the deceased said, “My father was Covid-positive. Other hospitals refused to admit him, NMCH agreed. They made us wait outside for 1.5 hours.”
Citing the unfortunate incident, Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey said, “For some days, the number of cases has increased in hospitals, efforts are being made to improve the facilities.”
