written by Medically Speaking Team

After three days of vaccinating fewer than 100,000 adults, including the newly-added category of 18-44 years, Maharashtra received 900,000 doses of vaccines on Tuesday afternoon from the Centre and is set to resume its vaccination for 45 years and above starting today.

“Till Monday we were left with only 25,000 to 30,000 doses under the national vaccination drive being run by the Centre for 45 years and above population and hence most of the centres were shut. This is despite Maharashtra capacity of vaccinating up to 800,000 beneficiaries a day. Only this afternoon, we have got around 900,000 doses of Covishield from the Centre, which will now be distributed across districts to resume the drive again,” said state health minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday.

written by Medically Speaking Team

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of U.S. is about to approve the use of two-dose Pfizer vaccine among children of 12-15 years of age, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

The rollout could begin as early as next week. More than 131 million shots of the Pfizer vaccine have been used to date in the U.S., and the extension to adolescents could assist with school re-opening later this year.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine — one of two mRNA vaccines (the other is from Moderna) that have Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) fin the U.S. for use in people 16 years and older — is likely to be cleared for EUA for adolescents as early as this week, as per reports, which were based on comments from FDA officials. The day after the FDA’s expected approval, the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will likely meet to give the vaccine the go ahead for use in adolescents.

The FDA declined to put a timeline to the approval.

As per the Washington Post, Stephanie Caccomo, an FDA spokesperson said, “The FDA’s review of Pfizer’s request to amend its emergency use authorization (EUA) in order to expand the age range for its COVID-19 vaccine to include individuals 12-15 years of age is ongoing.”

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

In a statement released on Monday, the PMO said that the final-year MBBS students as well as  BSc and GNM-qualified nurses can be deployed for Covid duties. It added that the medical personnel completing 100 days of Covid duties will be given priority in forthcoming regular government recruitments.

the PMO said final-year MBBS students can be utilised for providing services like teleconsultation and monitoring of mild Covid cases after due orientation under the faculty’s supervision. Medical interns will also be pressed into work under the supervision of their faculty.

The move is expected to reduce the workload on the existing doctors and nurses who are treating Covid patients now.

Those medical personnel completing 100 days of Covid duties will be given the Prime Minister’s Distinguished Covid National Service Samman from the Government of India and will also be given priority in forthcoming regular government recruitments.

The review meeting also decided to postpone NEET-PG for at least four months; the committee said the exam will not be held before August 31. Candidates will be given at least a month’s notice before the exams are held. This decision has been taken in the hope that this will make available a large number of qualified doctors for Covid duties.
