written by Medically Speaking Team

ICPA Health Products Ltd (ICPA), India’s leading pharmaceutical company and pioneers in the oral-health segment has introduced its latest offering, a denture management kit – Replay Kit, for the elderly. The kit consists of a complete denture hygiene and maintenance routine including a denture storage container, Fixon adhesive cream, Clinsodent cleanser and Clinsodent brush. Realizing the unique problems encountered by denture users, the company ICPA has assembled the kit for easy-to-use, everyday denture management.

The denture adhesive called Fixon Cream helps hold the dentures securely in the mouth helping the user eat, speak, look and feel better. It seals out any food particles and prevents its ingress underneath the denture surface and increases the bite force by as much as 10 times.

The denture cleanser called Clinsodent consists of effervescent cleansing tablets that help clean all water insoluble residues from dentures. Its antibacterial formula kills germs which cause odour and plaque.

The Clinsodent brush is designed for optimum hygiene. The two types of nylon bristles on opposite heads of the brush are designed to effectively clean all surfaces and grooves in the dentures. The contoured design maximises control while handling the brush.

NEET PG 2021 Application Deadline Extended: Delhi High Court Directs Centre, National Board Of Examinations To Consider Grievance

by Medically Speaking
written by Medically Speaking

In response to a petition seeking an extension of the deadline for registering to take the NEET PG 2021 examination, the Delhi High Court has directed the Centre and the National Board of Examinations to consider whether the deadline for candidates to complete internships should also be extended.

A single judge bench comprising of Justice Prateek Jalan directed the Centre to coordinate with the relevant agencies and take a decision on the said aspect before next date of hearing i.e. 12 August.

Moved by Siddharth Mittal, a student who successfully cleared all the semester examinations pursuant to admission in MBBS course in 2015, the plea states that the examination which was scheduled to be held on 18th April 2021 was later scheduled for 11 September 2021 vide a notification issued by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

However, the plea submits that the cut-off date for completion of internship was still 30th June 2021 owing to which the students who, due to postpone ment of NEET PG exam, will now be able to complete the internship before declaration of NEET-PG results and therefore, would become eligible for the NEET PG 2021.

The petitioner student therefore submits that he was earlier unable to fill the application form due to non completion of internship before declaration of result or starting of admission process, however would now be eligible to appear in the examination.
According to the plea, various representations were made by the Petitioner to the respondent authorities stating that him and other similarly situated students who became eligible later must be allowed to submit online application form on the portal and that the same may be reopened.

Mumbai doctor duped out of Rs 4 lakh, had promised brother-in-law medical admission

A doctor at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital was allegedly duped out of Rs 4 lakh by a fraudster promising admission for his brother-in-law to a medical college in Jalgaon. Santosh Gite, 43, filed a complaint at JJ Marg police station against a man who identified himself as Manish Maruti Salaskar.

“Last year, after the pandemic began, the doctor was treating Covid-19 patients at GT hospital when he was introduced to Salaskar, who was a volunteer at an NGO working,” said a police officer.

Salaskar claimed that he was the zonal manager of a newspaper’s circulation department and knew local politicians well. The doctor trusted him and asked him whether he could help his brother-in-law Pratik Ghule secure admission to a medical college.

“Salaskar told him that he knew people at Dr Ulhas Patil Medical College in Jalgaon and could help his brother-in-law get admission there. He then went to demand Rs 4 lakh as advance for the admission,” said the officer. The doctor told the police that his brother-in-law’s family had agreed to pay the amount and subsequently transferred Rs 4 lakh to Salaskar’s bank account.
Since his brother-in-law did not get admission even after it was closed in July 2020, the doctor then asked Salaskar to return the money. Salaskar, however, refused to return it initially and then on August 12, gave the doctor a cheque of Rs 4 lakhs.

Kerala: Doctor’s Association urges state govt to enforce restrictions in specific micro-containment zones

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

The Kerala government doctors’ association asked the state government on Tuesday to rigorously enforce the Covid measures, which include a 17-day quarantine for infected people and meticulous contact tracing, as the state continues to register the highest number of cases in the country. The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) made a further plea to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, requesting that limits be placed in particular micro-containment zones to curb the virus’s spread.

“Time-tested strategy of contact tracing and isolation which ensured an effective control during the first phase must be followed. Contact tracing must be entrusted to local RRT with the help of the workforce from other non-essential services. All positive cases must be quarantined for 17 days,” KGMOA said in the memorandum.

“Those with Covid like symptoms must also be quarantined even if tested negative on Antigen testing and RT-PCR repeated if symptoms persist,” it added.

The association also said that the restrictions should be imposed in specific micro containment zones like wards, rather than the whole panchayat/municipality/corporation.

“Present strategy of categorising areas based on TPR alone should be replaced by indicators like daily positive cases per 10,000, active cases per 10,000 along with TPR”, KGMOA said.

The association also urged the state government to set targets and criteria for testing to reduce TPR should be avoided. “Purpose of testing should be to identify cases rather than creating a false sense of security. So targeted testing of all symptomatic and their contacts must be the rule. More effective surveillance and testing must be done in thickly populated areas like colonies, coastal areas etc,” it said.

Mumbai’s Kasturba Hospital likely to start tests to detect variants next week

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

The Kasturba Gandhi hospital in Chinchpokli installed genome sequencing machines in their laboratory on Tuesday. The hospital will begin conducting tests to identify variants of Sars-Cov-2 – the virus that causes Covid-19 – from next week, making it the first civic-run hospital to conduct whole genome sequencing in Mumbai.

The high speed machine can run tests on 380 samples per round. The civic body will incur a cost of ₹10,000 for testing each sample. The machines will be inaugurated by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday.

Genome sequencing is an exercise to study the changes in the structure of the virus over time. A combination of changes in the ribonucleic acid of the virus can give birth to a new variant. Currently, it takes over two-three months to get test results of genome sequencing which delays the epidemiological study of the mutated virus in infected patients. With the starting of the laboratory, the results of 380 samples will be available within three-four days.

Dr Jayanti Shastri, in-charge of the molecular diagnostic reference laboratory of the hospital, said, “These tests have three phases—library presentation which in simple form is called pre-sequencing preparation, which takes two-three days. Then we do the sequencing of the samples in the machine that generally takes 4-5 hours. In the third stage, we do analysis of the results to understand the variations.”

Covaxin is efficient against Delta variant: ICMR study

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

According to a research published in the biorxiv by the Indian Council of Medical and Research (ICMR), Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin (BBV152) is effective against the Delta Plus (AY.1) variant of the coronavirus.

“Here, we have evaluated the IgG antibody titer and neutralizing potential of sera of Covid-19 naïve individuals full doses of BBV152 vaccine, Covid-19 recovered cases with full dose vaccines and breakthrough post-immunization BBV152 vaccines against Delta, Delta AY.1 and B.1.617.3,” the study said.

The second wave in India has been triggered by the recent appearance of the Sars-CoV-2 variation B.1.617.2 (Delta) form, which is highly transmissible.

Covaxin, a whole-virion inactivated Sars-CoV-2 vaccine used for mass immunization in the country, showed a 65.2 % protection against the Delta variant in a double-blind, randomized, multicenter, phase 3 clinical trial.

Subsequently, Delta has further, mutated to Delta AY.1, AY.2 and AY.3.

Of these, AY.1 variant was first detected in India in April 2021 and subsequently from 20 other countries as well, the study said.

The study is a pre-print and has not been peer reviewed.

Covaxin demonstrated 77.8 % effectiveness against symptomatic Covid-19 and 65.2% protection against the B.1.617.2 Delta variant, Bharat Biotech had said while concluding the final analysis of Covaxin efficacy from Phase 3 trials on July 3.
