Another WHO Covid origin inquiry rejected by China

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Covid-19’s origins have been called into question again by the World Health Organization, but China has rejected the WHO’s demand for a new investigation, stating it prefers “scientific” research above “political” ones.

Pressure is once more mounting on Beijing to consider a fresh probe into the orgins of a pandemic which has killed more than four million people and paralysed economies worldwide since it first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

A WHO team of international experts went to Wuhan in January 2021 to produce a first phase report, which was written in conjunction with their Chinese counterparts. It failed to find a conclusive position on how the virus began.

On Thursday the WHO urged China to share raw data from the earliest Covid-19 cases to revive its probe into the origins of the disease.

China hit back, repeating its position that the initial investigation was enough and that calls for further data were motivated by politics instead of scientific inquiry.

“We oppose political tracing … and abandoning the joint report” issued after the WHO expert team’s Wuhan visit in January, vice foreign minister Ma Zhaoxu told reporters. “We support scientific tracing.”

That report said the virus jumping from bats to humans via an intermediate animal was the most probable scenario, while a leak from the Wuhan virology labs was “extremely unlikely”.

Ma rejected suggestions of new lines of investigation.

“The conclusions and recommendations of WHO and China joint report were recognised by the international community and the scientific community,” he said.

“Future global traceability work should and can only be further carried out on the basis of this report, rather than starting a new one.”

USFDA nod to Pfizer, Moderna for immunocompromised individuals

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has amended the emergency use authorizations for the Pfizer and the Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to allow people with compromised immune systems to get the third dose.

“Today, FDA amended the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for both the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to allow for the use of an additional dose in certain immunocompromised individuals,” US FDA tweeted.

“After a thorough review of the available data, the FDA determined that this small, vulnerable group may benefit from a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines,” FDA’s acting commissioner said.

The decision to expand the emergency use of both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines is meant to help those patients with immune deficiencies who are considered most likely to benefit from an additional shot. An estimated 2.7 per cent of adults in the United States are immunocompromised, according to the CDC.

Specifically, these immunocompromised individuals are solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise, the US FDA said.

“Today’s action allows doctors to boost immunity in certain immunocompromised individuals who need extra protection from COVID-19. As we’ve previously stated, other individuals who are fully vaccinated are adequately protected and do not need an additional dose of the covid-19 vaccine at this time,” acting FDA Commissioner said.

GGH duty doctor is accused of stealing 22 lakh rupees from a black fungus patient

by Medically Speaking
written by Medically Speaking

The patient’s husband is planning to file a police report, and a departmental investigation is underway.

In the guise of providing ‘Lyophilized Amphotericin B,’ a duty doctor at the Government General Hospital in Vijayawada allegedly duped a black fungus patient’s husband out of Rs 22 lakh.

Pottem Vijayalakshmi of Kadapa was admitted to GGH on May 29 and treated for black fungus until June 17, when her condition deteriorated and she moved out. On July 7, she passed away. The incident was recently brought to light after the patient’s husband, Pottem Raghukulesa Saran, a retired government junior lecturer, filed a complaint with the GGH superintendent regarding all bank deposit transactions to the doctor’s account.

Mr. Raghukulesa alleged that during the treatment in GGH a total of ₹22.8 lakh was paid to duty doctor Thota Vani Supriya who promised them of supply of the anti-fungal injection at ₹70,000 to ₹1 lakh each which was allegedly not available in the hospital. The patient’s son P. Anil also sent money via online transfer to the doctor, they allege.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Raghukulesa said that they would soon lodge a police complaint against the duty doctor. “We are still bereaving her (wife) death and certain formalities and rituals are being done. I will complain to the police in Vijayawada in a day or two. I was told by officials that the duty doctor was suspended,” he said.

Mr. Raghukulesa said that instead of accepting her wrongdoing the duty doctor levelled allegations against our bereaved family. “We received legal notices from the duty doctor two weeks ago with false allegations. Police inquiry would reveal all the facts. We have all the proofs of conversation with the doctor,” he said. Mr. Raghukulesa’s son

Meanwhile, Health Department and district officials are conducting an inquiry into the issue. Dr. Vani was not available for comment.

Thrombosis common in Covid patients during both waves, Study by Gangaram suggests

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

The Covid pandemic was marked by an alarmingly high rate of hyperclotting in patients, endangering their lives with clots that cut off blood supply to vital organs such as the heart, lungs, brain, bowel, and kidney, resulting in sudden death or severe complications such as stroke, kidney failure, and gut attack.

Covid-19 patients reported clotting in vessels supplying blood to the limbs, including the toes, legs, arms, and fingers, in the second wave. Due to delayed diagnosis and lack of prompt access to vascular surgeons, several people lost limbs to gangrene.

In fact, a study conducted by the Institute of Vascular and Endovascular Sciences (IVES) at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital found that the occurrence of such clots in limbs was higher in the second wave, and patients presented with dead feet and legs.

“Of the 92 Covid-19 positive patients treated at IVES, 19% patients lost their limbs as they had to undergo surgery for removal of dead leg due to myriad reasons including late presentation to hospital, inability to perform clot removal surgery due to critical Covid-19 illness. 11 patients lost their lives due to severe Covid,” said Dr Varinder Bedi, head of the department at IVES.
