Omicron BA.2 variant becomes dominant as Covid cases rise in parts of US

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

The prevalent BA.2 form of Omicron, which accounts for 35% of Covid cases in the US, is causing an increase in infections in several areas of the country.
According to the AFP, the country is presently recording an average of 28,600 cases per day, significantly below the previous peak of more than 800,000 average daily infections in January.

Covid-19 mortality are estimated to be approximately 900 each day, with a total of one million deaths from the sickness likely within around a month, according to the article.

However, Rochelle Walensky, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), warned of early indicators of a new wave.

“We have noticed a minor rise in reported Covid-19 cases in New York state and New York City, as well as some increases in persons in hospital with Covid-19 in New England, particularly where the BA.2 variation has been reaching levels above 50% (prevalence),” she told reporters.

The BA.2 version is more severe than the original Omicron. It is also less likely to avoid immune protection, but it is more contagious.
While some have faulted governments for loosening restrictions too rapidly, epidemiologists have also referred to the BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron variety, which has grown prominent in several nations.

BA.2 is sometimes referred to as “stealth Omicron” because it is more difficult to detect, and it is predicted to be roughly 30% more infectious than its predecessor BA.1.

According to Lawrence Young, a virologist at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, the growing instances in Europe are the result of a “perfect storm” of three factors: the relaxation of limitations, declining immunity after vaccination, and BA.2.

“Removing regulations has aided the spread of BA.2 and may result in the development of additional varieties,” he told AFP.

According to Antoine Flahault, head of the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva, “a handful of theories are on the table that are not mutually incompatible.”

He told AFP that BA.2 was “certainly a major suspect in understanding the present recovery,” and that decreasing immunity and relaxing of measures were other factors.

During the infection resurgence, he also mentioned air pollution in Western Europe, citing studies that found a “strong link” between Covid outbreaks and high levels of fine particulate matter in the air.

History, significance and theme of World Tuberculosis Day 2022

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Tuberculosis (TB) is a dangerous lung illness caused by a bacteria that spreads by small droplets in the air exhaled during coughs or sneezes. While Johann Schonlein developed the word TB in 1834, the infection is thought to have existed for 3 million years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States (CDC).

History of World Tuberculosis Day: The virus was so lethal that it was dubbed the “white plague” in the 1700s owing to the sufferers’ pale appearance. On March 24, 1882, Dr. Robert Koch discovered the bacteria that caused TB. After a century, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease requested that the day be designated as World Tuberculosis Day.

Theme of World Tuberculosis Day 2022: This year’s theme is ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives,’ emphasising the need of investing resources to battle the virus and meeting pledges to end it. The struggle has taken on added significance in light of Covid-19, which has hampered advances in TB treatment and research. In addition, the topic assures access to prevention and treatment in order to reach the United Nations Health Organization’s goal of Universal Health Coverage.

The significance of World Tuberculosis Day: Tuberculosis affects roughly 2 billion people worldwide. According to World Health Organization data, 10.4 million people had TB in 2016, and 1.7 million died as a result of the disease.

However, due to several misunderstandings, it is not seen as a significant issue. Raising awareness of the virus can aid in the treatment of those who are at high risk. If at-risk people are effectively vaccinated, the illness might be cured and TB eradicated.

In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, 10 million people were afflicted with TB, with 1.5 million deaths. It was the 13th leading cause of mortality and the second leading cause of death among infectious disorders after Covid-19.

The most common type of TB is pulmonary tuberculosis, which affects the lungs, but extrapulmonary tuberculosis affects other parts of the body and is more frequent in persons with weakened immune systems, making it difficult to keep the infection isolated in one location.

TB symptoms that are common

Tuberculosis symptoms differ based on where the bacteria are growing in the body. Tuberculosis is caused by germs that develop in the lungs (pulmonary TB). Dr. Harish Chafle describes the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis.

The following are signs of TB in the lungs:

  • A severe cough that lasts three weeks or more
  • Chest discomfort
  • Coughing up blood or sputum is a sign that something is wrong (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)

Other symptoms of TB disease are

  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • No appetite
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Sweating at night

Reading Can Revamp Your Health, Know How

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Murasaki Shikibu, a Japanese lady, authored “The Tale of Genji” in the 11th century, a 54-chapter narrative of courtly seduction that is thought to be the world’s first book.

People all across the globe are still enthralled by books over 1,000 years later — even in a day where stories arrive on portable displays and disappear 24 hours later.

What precisely do people get from reading books? Is it only an issue of pleasure, or are there other advantages? The scientific answer is unequivocally “yes.”

Reading books improves your physical and mental health, and the effects can last a lifetime. They start in early childhood and last till the senior years. Here’s a quick rundown of how reading books may improve your brain — and your health.

Strengthens your Brain

According to a growing corpus of studies, reading physically transforms your thinking.

Researchers used MRI images to confirmTrusted Source that reading includes a complex network of circuits and impulses in the brain. Those networks get stronger and more sophisticated as your reading skill grows.

Researchers utilised functional MRI scans to test the effect of reading a novel on the brain in one studyTrusted Source performed in 2013. Over the course of nine days, study participants read the novel “Pompeii.” As the tale progressed, more and more parts of the brain became active.

Brain scans revealed that brain connection increased throughout the reading time and for many days thereafter, particularly in the somatosensory cortex, the portion of the brain that responds to physical sensations such as movement and pain.

Increases your ability to Empathize

In terms of experiencing pain, research has shown that people who read literary fiction — novels that examine the inner lives of characters — have a greater ability to understand the sentiments and beliefs of others.

This capacity is referred to by researchers as “theory of mind,” a collection of talents required for developing, negotiating, and maintaining social connections.

While a single session of reading literary fiction is unlikely to elicit this experience, research reveals that long-term fiction readers have a more developed theory of mind.

Adds to your Vocabulary

Reading researchers have debated what is known as “the Matthew effectTrusted Source” since the 1960s, referring to the biblical text Matthew 13:12: “Whoever possesses will be given more, and they will have an abundance.” Whoever does not have, even what they have, will have it taken away.”

The Matthew effect encapsulates the idea that the rich become richer and the poor get poorer – a concept that relates to words as much as it does to money.

Researchers discovered that pupils who read books on a regular basis, beginning at a young age, progressively build huge vocabularies. And the extent of your vocabulary may have an impact on many aspects of your life, from standardised test results to college admissions and work chances.

According to a 2019 Cengage research, 69 percent of employers want to hire employees with “soft” talents, such as excellent communication. Reading books is the best approach to broaden your vocabulary and learn new terms in context.

Prevention from age-related cognitive decline

Reading books and periodicals, according to the National Institute on AgingTrusted Source, is a good method to keep your mind active as you become older.

Although research has not clearly established that reading books prevents illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, studies have shown that seniors who read and do arithmetic problems every day preserve and increase their cognitive performance.

And the sooner you begin, the better. A 2013 research done by Rush University Medical Center discovered that persons who had always engaged in cognitively challenging activities were less likely to acquire the plaques, lesions, and tau-protein tangles present in dementia patients’ brains.

Helps in stress Management

A group of researchers in the United States investigated the impact of yoga, comedy, and reading on the stress levels of students in demanding health science programmes in 2009.

The researchers discovered that 30 minutes of reading reduced blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of psychological discomfort exactly as efficiently as yoga and comedy.

“Because time constraints are one of the most frequently cited reasons for high stress levels reported by health science students,” the authors concluded, “30 minutes of one of these techniques can be easily incorporated into their schedule without diverting a large amount of time from their studies.”

Helps in sound sleep

The Mayo Clinic recommends reading as part of a normal sleep pattern.

For the greatest results, consider a print book over reading on a screen, as the light generated by your gadget may keep you awake and contribute to other negative health implications.

If you have difficulties going asleep, doctors advise you to read somewhere other than your bedroom.

Helps in dealing with depression

“Comfort from imagined things is not an imaginary consolation,” British philosopher Sir Roger Scruton famously said. People suffering from depression may feel alienated and distant from others. And it’s a mood that literature may occasionally alleviate.

Reading fiction allows you to briefly leave your own reality and become engrossed in the characters’ imagined experiences. Nonfiction self-help books can also give you ways for dealing with symptoms.

As a result, the United Kingdom’s National Health Service has launched Reading Well, a Books on Prescription initiative in which medical specialists recommend self-help books chosen by medical experts expressly for certain diseases.

Help you live a longer life

A long-term health and retirement studyTrusted Source examined a cohort of 3,635 adult participants for 12 years and discovered that those who read books lived around 2 years longer than those who didn’t read or read magazines and other kinds of media.

The study also found that persons who read more than 3 1/2 hours per week were 23% more likely to live longer lives than those who did not read at all.

If you’re short on time, set aside a few minutes each day to write a blog about a certain topic. If you’re seeking for a getaway, fantasy or historical literature may whisk you away from your current circumstances and into a whole other universe.

If you’re on a fast track in your profession, read nonfiction advice from someone who’s been there. Consider it a mentoring that you may pick up and put down as needed.

One thing to keep in mind: don’t read only on your gadget. Look through print books as well.

People who read print books do better on comprehension tests and recall more of what they read than those who read the same content in digital form, according to several studies.

This might be due, in part, to the fact that individuals read print slower than they consume digital material.

Best alternative to binge-watching

There’s nothing wrong with binge-watching a whole television series in a single weekend, just as there’s nothing wrong with indulging in a huge, decadent dessert.

However, binge-watching TV should definitely be reserved for special occasions rather than your primary source of intellectual stimulation. According to research, extended TV viewing, particularly for youngsters, may alter the brain in unfavourable ways.

Takeaway

Reading is really beneficial to your health. According to research, regular reading:

  • improves brain connectivity
  • increases your vocabulary and comprehension
  • empowers you to empathize with other people
  • aids in sleep readiness
  • reduces stress
  • lowers blood pressure and heart rate
  • fights depression symptoms
  • prevents cognitive decline as you age
  • contributes to a longer life

It’s especially crucial for kids to read as much as they can since the benefits of reading build up over time. However, it is never too late to begin reaping the many physical and psychological advantages that can be found inside the pages of a good book.

Vitamin C: Improving intake works wonders for health

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Immunity is more important than ever during pandemics. Vitamin C, commonly known as ascorbic acid, is a vital vitamin that helps to increase immunity and protect against a variety of infections and chronic disorders. According to research, the vitamin can also aid patients with heart disease or high blood pressure by protecting end organ damage and improving vascular endothelial function, which helps control blood clotting.

Vitamin C serves a variety of tasks, including cell protection and the maintenance of healthy skin, blood vessels, bones, and cartilage. It also aids in wound healing.

“Vitamin C is an important component for boosting immunity.” Because of the significant oxidative stress found in these individuals, people with prevalent NCDs such as diabetes and hypertension may require more vitamin C than others. Individuals can increase their usual nutritional intake by taking vitamin C supplements in addition to eating a well-balanced diet rich in citrus fruits and tomatoes.

How much vitamin C we require; what happens if we consume too much of it

According to the NHS, adults aged 19 to 64 require 40 mg of vitamin C each day (National Health Service, UK). Because it cannot be stored in the body, it must be consumed on a daily basis. However, excessive vitamin C use should be avoided to avoid adverse effects such as stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, or gas.

How to Determine if You Have a Vitamin C Deficiency

This vital vitamin is inadequate in an estimated 74% of individuals in North India and 46% of adults in both North and South India. People with noncommunicable illnesses are more deficient in vitamin C than others, and as a result, their immune levels are lower.

Common signs of vitamin C insufficiency include bleeding gums, muscular and joint aches, anaemia, and poor wound healing. A vitamin C-rich diet, along with supplementation, can help improve levels and sustain optimal health.

Vitamin C insufficiency is frequent among the elderly. Pollution or pollutant exposure, as well as heavy cigarette use, can all contribute to deficiency.

Changes in lifestyle that might boost vitamin C levels in the body

A nutritious, well-balanced diet rich in citrus fruits and tomatoes is required for adequate vitamin C consumption.
Vitamin C is an important component for boosting immunity. A nutritious, well-balanced diet rich in citrus fruits and tomatoes is required for adequate vitamin C consumption. In addition to healthy nutrition and diet, boosting micronutrient consumption with vitamin C supplementation can improve health outcomes and promote immunity.

Vitamin C sources to include in a summer diet

Oranges are well recognised for being a good source of vitamin C. Aside from that, foods high in vitamin C include kiwis, strawberries, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, and red peppers.

Eyes and Exams: Tips for students

by Medically Speaking Team
written by Medically Speaking Team

Exam season is once again approaching, and students studying for 10th, 12th, and numerous entrance tests are working at breakneck speed. As a result, some tips on how to care for your eyes at this time are definitely in order.

Sleep shortage: A minimum of 7 hours of sleep is required to maintain excellent health for the eyes as well as the rest of the body and mind. Sleep deficiency causes eye issues such as recurring styles (eye boils), which cause discomfort and swelling of the eyelids and result in lost study time.

Dietary deficiency: Because students often skip meals or rely on fast food, nutritional deficits can lead to weariness and lack of attention, as well as eye problems such as blepharitis, dry eyes, and eyelid infections. # Eat nutritious, balanced meals at regular intervals. Students preparing for examinations should eat foods high in vitamins A, D, E, B complex, minerals, and Omega 3.
Dehydration: Because of the intensity of their studies, some students fail to drink enough water and fluids, resulting in dehydration and frequent headaches, difficulty to focus, and sleepy eyes.

Postural issues: Poor posture has an impact on the neck, shoulders, lower back, and eyes, particularly in students with poor eye muscle balance and astigmatism.

Duration of study: Studying for 8 hours puts as much strain on the eye muscles as jogging 50 to 60 kilometres does on the leg muscles. So studying for 10 to 12 hours without rest puts great strain on the eye muscles, which has been linked to the development of myopia (glass power), spasms of the eye muscles, eye strain, difficulty to concentrate the eyes, eye discomfort, and severe headaches.

Digital Eye Strain: Also known as Computer Vision Syndrome, this condition is quite frequent among today’s students. The most common symptoms are redness, irritation, and a foreign body feeling in the eye. When using computers or cellphones for extended periods of time, tears in the eyes progressively disappear. Normally, a person blinks around 20 times per minute, however when using a computer or a mobile phone, the blink rate drops to once or twice per minute. This decreases the replacement of evaporated tears, resulting in dry eye syndrome. Air conditioning also dehydrates the skin and eyes, causing them to become dry.

Pro tip:

  1. Drink atleast 3 to 3.75 litres of fluids per day.
  2. Take short breaks every 30 minutes and look at far objects for 10 seconds to relax the eye muscles.
  3. Students who use computers and mobile phones must be careful to follow the 20 20 20 20 rule.
  4. Hold the device 20 inches from the eye.
  5. take a break of 20 seconds every 20 minutes
  6. look at any object 20 feet away.
  7. blink 20 times every minute
  8. Air conditioning should be frequently switched off and should never blow directly on to face.

Doctors at GGHC treat complicated eye tumour

by Medically Speaking
written by Medically Speaking

Doctors at Gleneagles Global Health City (GGHC) hospital in Dubai used a minimally invasive treatment to treat a patient from Oman who had a non-malignant tumour in his right eye.

According to a hospital statement, the patient, a bus driver, was urged by physicians to undergo a complicated operation that posed the possibility of him getting a drooping top eyelid, a squint, or loss of eyesight in the worst case scenario.

Given the necessity of eye sight in his career, he sought the advice of Ravindra Mohan, Orbital and Oculoplastic Surgeon at GGHC. Dr. Mohan stated that the tumour, which was around 2cm in size, was in a delicate area below the eyeball and closer to the optical nerves. The tumour was effectively removed through a tiny hole near the lower eyelid, he added, without affecting any essential tissues.

Alok Khullar, CEO of GGHC, complimented Dr. Mohan and his colleagues on the treatment, which required extreme accuracy and competence.

5 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Lung Health in Long Run

by Medically Speaking
written by Medically Speaking

If you have asthma, you may be wondering if it has long-term affects on your lungs.

Asthma inflammation can be accompanied with changes in the airway wall, known as airway remodelling. These alterations are more noticeable in poorly controlled asthma.

However, lung damage from asthma can be avoided if therapy is initiated early and symptoms are adequately managed.

The Long-Term Consequences of Asthma

According to a reliable source, airway remodelling may result in a reduction of lung function over time. It may also impair the effectiveness of your asthma medicine.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can potentially be caused by airway remodelling (COPD). COPD does not arise from uncontrolled asthma, although it is easier to develop if you have airway remodelling from uncontrolled asthma.

Asthma-COPD overlap syndrome refers to those who have both asthma and COPD (ACOS). Because the symptoms of ACOS might be similar to those of asthma or COPD, it is possible to misdiagnose it.

However, it is critical to recognise ACOS if you have it. Asthma and COPD are treated differently.

Other potential impacts of asthma include:

  • chronic sleep deprivation from nighttime symptoms
  • health effects from reduced physical activity
  • growth delay and learning disabilities in children
  • missed work for adults
  • coughing spells
  • respiratory failure
  • pneumonia

Controlling your asthma symptoms can help to decrease airway remodelling, lower your risk of COPD and ACOS, and protect your lungs.

While it may appear that asthma has taken control of you at times, you do have some control over your illness. Here are five things you can do to keep your lungs healthy.

1. Stay away from environmental stressors

Asthma triggers that induce attacks may be present in the air you breathe. The same causes do not impact everyone with asthma.

You may be able to lessen the amount of asthma flares you experience if you can foresee and avoid encounters with your triggers.

Common asthma triggers include:

  • tobacco smoke
  • dust mites
  • pests
  • pet fur
  • mold
  • household disinfectants
  • indoor and outdoor pollution

The American Lung Association (ALA) compares ozone-induced lung inflammation to a severe sunburn in your lungs.

They advise reviewing the air quality forecast for your region before engaging in outdoor labour or exercise. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website, Airnow.gov, allows you to check the air quality in your location.

According to the American Lung Association’s 2021 State of the Air Report, 11.5 million individuals with asthma reside in areas with unsafe levels of at least one pollutant. Consider using indoor exercise as part of your asthma management strategy on days when the air quality is bad.

Smoking, in addition to being an asthma trigger, is a risk factor for COPD. If you smoke and are able to quit, you will minimise your chances of acquiring ACOS. The American Lung Association provides numerous smoking cessation aids that may be useful.

2. Take your meds as prescribed
According to a survey done in 2011 and 2012, just 8.3 percent of patients fully adhered to their asthma treatments. The word “adherence” refers to taking medicine as prescribed by a healthcare expert and not missing a dosage for an extended period of time.

The issue of noncompliance remains, and a 2019 review is planned.

Some of the reasons why, as outlined by Trusted Source, are as follows:

  • drug regimen complexity
  • fear of side effects
  • inhaler technique
  • cost
  • forgetfulness
  • misunderstood instructions
  • denial about health condition
  • inappropriate expectations
  • dissatisfaction with healthcare professional
  • cultural or religious reasons

The medication your healthcare professional prescribes to you is based on the latest research and is an important part of your asthma treatment plan.

According to the same research, higher medication adherence results in:

  • positive health outcomes
  • improvements in disease control
  • reduced mortality

You can improve your medication adherence with some simple strategies:

  • Ask your doctor for directions again to ensure you remember them correctly.
  • Ask for help with your inhaler technique to make sure it’s effective.
  • Use a reminder tool like an app or symbol on a calendar.

It’s critical to be open and honest with your doctor about your treatment adherence. If they are unaware that you have not been taking your medicine, they may prescribe more medications that are unneeded.

3. Keep respiratory infections at bay

Respiratory infections can set off asthma episodes and exacerbate symptoms. Keeping infections at bay protects your lungs.

The ALA recommends the following precautions to avoid infection:

  • Get a flu vaccine.
  • Stay away from crowded places during flu season.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice per day.
  • Avoid touching your face.

Start self-care at the first sign of symptoms. Sometimes the signs of an infection can mimic those of asthma, such as cough. However, asthma doesn’t cause:

  • chills
  • fever
  • sore throat
  • muscle aches

Knowing how to tell the difference between asthma symptoms and infection symptoms will help you decide whether to stay at home, drink extra fluids, and get enough rest.

4. Workout

Some people have asthma symptoms when they exercise, therefore they avoid physical activity to avoid asthma triggers. However, they are passing up a golden opportunity to enhance their lung health.

According to the ALA, daily exercise offers various advantages. These are some examples:

  • increased lung capacity
  • improved blood flow
  • decreased airway inflammation
  • higher endurance and stamina
  • immune system support

If you experience exercise-induced asthma episodes, your doctor can assist you in determining the cause. It might, for example, be a simple fitness issue. A medication change may assist if your asthma isn’t being treated as well as it may be.

For persons with asthma, the American Lung Association suggests the following exercise strategies:

  • Include a warmup first and cool down afterward.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when exercising outside in cold weather.
  • Check the air quality before you exercise outdoors and, if necessary, choose an indoor activity instead.
  • Stop immediately if you experience chest discomfort such as pain, coughing, or shortness of breath. Use your inhaler and sit and relax.

If you have a medical issue, such as asthma, it is best to consult with your doctor before beginning a new form of exercise.

5. Make dietary adjustments
The effect of nutrition on inflammation may have an impact on the health of your lungs.

A research published in 2020Trusted Source examined 12,687 Hispanic/Latino people aged 18 to 74 and discovered that a pro-inflammatory diet raised the risk of asthma, but an anti-inflammatory diet may have a good effect on lung function.

Inflammation isn’t the sole factor influencing the effect of food on lung function. Carbohydrates use more oxygen and produce more carbon dioxide, causing your lungs to work harder. This implies that lowering your carbohydrate intake and substituting it with healthy fats may help you breathe easier.

The ALA recommends the following dietary changes:

  • D-calcium phosphate Vitamin D strengthens the immune system and decreases airway inflammation, and low levels have been related to an increased risk of asthma episodes in both children and adults.
  • The antioxidant vitamin E. Tocopherol, found in vitamin E, may help decrease breathing and coughing.

The following foods should be avoided:

  • Items that cause gas, such as beans, fried meals, and carbonated beverages, might make breathing more difficult.
  • Sulfites, which are typically present in dried fruits, might aggravate asthma symptoms.
  • Salicylates, found in coffee, tea, herbs, and spices, might irritate certain asthmatics.

A nutritionist who specialises in asthma can help you construct a diet plan geared for long-term lung health if you have access to one. A healthcare professional might also be of assistance.

The main point

Uncontrolled asthma can cause long-term lung abnormalities and raise your risk of getting COPD and ACOS.

However, you do have some say in the matter. Changes in diet and exercise, adherence to medications, and protection from pollution and infection can all help keep your lungs healthy.

Are all breast lumps dangerous? Why is early evaluation essential?

by Dr. Ritu Sethi
written by Dr. Ritu Sethi

BY: Dr Ritu Sethi, Senior Consultant- Gynaecology, Cloud Nine Hospital,

Sector 14 Gurgaon and Apex Clinic, Sector 31, Gurgaon

With the cases of breast cancer rising increasingly in India as compared to the western countries, it’s crucisl we need to take care of our breast similar to the way we look after other organs of the body. According to the World Health Organization, In 2018, it is estimated that 627,000 women died from breast cancer globally – that is approximately 15% of all cancer deaths among women.

Breast lump is no doubt a serious condition and could be the initial symptoms of breast cancer. But, one shouldn’t be worried about it because all the breast lumps are not cancerours. Particularly in younger women, breast lumps are a normal condition. However, one should get it evaluated by a doctor if it’s new and feels different.

How breast tissues normally feel?

Our breasts are comprising of tissues of various shapes, sizes and consistency. Some are fatty, glandular and connective tissue. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, these tissues also change thereby making the breast tender. Breast tissues also undergo modifications with age.

When to see the doctor?

One should visit the doctor when:

  • You find a new breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue
  • There is a change in the size, shape or appearance of the breast
  • Breast pain stays for a longer time
  • There is some change in the skin near the breast, such as itchiness, redness, scaling or puckering
  • The nipple has become little inverted

Procedures to evaluate breast lump

Your doctor might ask you to get some tests to get the confirmed result of breast lump.

  • Mammogram
  • Breast Ultrasound
  • Breast MRI
  • Breast Biopsy

Follow-up after breast lump evaluation is essential

If the breast lump isn’t cancerous, your doctor will decide if you need short-term monitoring with clinical breast exams or repeat breast imaging. You may have to see the doctor again in two to three months. The doctor will monitor again if there have been changes in your breast.

If the diagnosis is in question — the clinical breast exam and the mammogram show areas of suspicion, for example, but the biopsy reveals benign tissue — you’ll be referred to a surgeon or other specialist for further consultation.

If the breast lump is cancerous, you’ll work with your doctor to create a treatment plan. The stage and type of breast cancer will decide the further treatment procedure. Generally a surgery is performed if the lump is proven to be cancer. The surgeon before performing the surgery will explain appropriate surgical options and provide you with the information necessary to make this decision. You may have several consultations with other physicians for additional treatment, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy or hormone therapy.

Ulcers: Diagnostics, Treatment and More

by Medically Speaking
written by Medically Speaking

There is no clear evidence that modern life’s stress or a steady diet of fast food causes stomach and small intestine ulcers, but they are still common in our society: one out of every ten Americans will experience the burning, gnawing abdominal pain of a peptic (or gastric) ulcer at some point in their lives.

Peptic ulcers are holes or cracks in the protective lining of the duodenum (the upper section of the small intestine) or the stomach, which are in touch with stomach acids and enzymes. Duodenal ulcers occur more frequently than stomach ulcers.

Esophageal ulcers are very uncommon, forming in the oesophagus (or swallowing tube) as a result of pharmaceutical exposure, such as some antibiotics or anti-inflammatories, or alcohol addiction.

Until the mid-1980s, conventional thinking held that ulcers were caused by stress, a hereditary proclivity for increased stomach acid output, and bad living practises (including overindulging in rich and fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco). It was thought that such impacts lead to the accumulation of stomach acids, which destroy the protective lining of the stomach, duodenum, or oesophagus.

While increased stomach acid output undoubtedly contributes to the formation of ulcers, a relatively new viewpoint contends that bacterial infection is the major cause of peptic ulcers. Indeed, studies undertaken since the mid-1980s have revealed that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is present in more than 90% of duodenal ulcers and around 80% of stomach ulcers. However, new data show that such numbers are dropping.

Other variables appear to contribute to ulcer development, particularly in people infected with H. pylori:

  • Overuse of over-the-counter painkillers (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen)
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Psychological stress
  • Smoking

Other research indicates that stomach ulcers are more common in elderly persons. This might be due to:

  • Arthritic is common among the elderly, and relieving arthritis pain may include taking aspirin or ibuprofen on a regular basis.
  • The pylorus (the valve between the stomach and the duodenum) relaxes with age, allowing excess bile (a chemical generated in the liver to promote digestion) to leak into the stomach and erode the stomach lining.

People with type A blood are also more prone to develop malignant stomach ulcers for unknown reasons.

Duodenal ulcers are more common in patients with type O blood, presumably because they lack the material on the surface of blood cells that protects the duodenal lining.

DIAGNOSTICS

If your doctor suspects you have a peptic ulcer, they will most likely begin with a physical exam and certain tests:

  • They’ll feel your stomach and ask whether you’ve had any soreness, pain, or bloating. They may use a stethoscope to listen for any noises coming from your stomach.
  • The next step will be to conduct tests to search for H. pylori bacteria. For these, your doctor may collect blood, stool, or breath samples from you.
  • In certain situations, especially if you’re older and your symptoms include weight loss or loss of appetite, they may use a long, flexible tube called an endoscope to examine your neck and stomach for indications of an ulcer. (You will be given sleeping medication.) A tiny sample of tissue from an ulcer can also be taken with an endoscope and examined in a laboratory.
  • Before taking X-rays of your stomach, they may ask you to consume a milky liquid called barium. This drink covers your digestive tract, making issues like ulcers more visible.

TREATMENT

If you have a peptic ulcer, your doctor will propose a treatment strategy based on the source of the problem:

  • The most frequent treatment is a combination of antibiotics to kill the H. pylori bacteria and medicines to reduce stomach acid. Proton pump inhibitors (such as Aciphex or Nexium) and antibiotics are common examples. PPIs will be prescribed to you for several weeks.
  • You must stop taking over-the-counter pain relievers if they are the cause of your ulcer.
  • They may also provide a protectant, which encapsulates ulcers to protect them from stomach acid.

Lifestyle changes can help, too. You might need to:

  • Quit smoking.
  • Drink less alcohol or caffeine.
  • Stay away from foods that make your symptoms worse.

After treatment, your doctor may want to keep a close eye on you, depending on:

  • The size of your ulcer and where it was
  • How well the treatment worked
  • If you had any other problems

If left untreated, an ulcer can lead to significant complications such as gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Untreated ulcers can potentially cause a hole in your stomach, which may require surgery to repair.
