At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu engaged in a significant discussion with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to explore collaborative opportunities in healthcare, education, and innovation. The meeting, aimed at positioning Andhra Pradesh as a global leader in these sectors, emphasized the state’s commitment to leveraging technology and innovation for public welfare.
Strengthening Healthcare & AI Innovation
During the meeting, Naidu and Gates deliberated on establishing a Centre of Excellence for Health Innovation and Diagnostics in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is envisioned to offer cutting-edge medical services, strengthen public health systems, and integrate advanced healthcare technologies. Gates, known for his philanthropic work through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), was invited to play a key role in this ambitious project.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Naidu said, “I am delighted to meet Bill Gates again after a long time. His focus on technology and innovation has been an inspiration to all. We discussed opportunities for collaboration in health and AI innovation, and I look forward to BMGF’s partnership in Andhra Pradesh’s progress.”
Andhra Pradesh as a Hub for Innovation & AI Research
Naidu extended an invitation to Bill Gates to join the advisory board of the proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) University in Andhra Pradesh. The AI University is expected to drive advancements in machine learning, big data analytics, and healthcare applications.
Additionally, he assured Gates that Andhra Pradesh could serve as a gateway for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s initiatives in South India, providing a platform to expand its impact in healthcare and technology-driven solutions.
Expanding Tech and Manufacturing Investments
Apart from healthcare, Naidu’s visit to the WEF was focused on attracting global investments in various sectors, including semiconductor manufacturing, green energy, and digital innovation. He engaged in discussions with leading global executives, presenting Andhra Pradesh as an emerging technology and investment hub.
- Google’s Chip Design Centre:
- Naidu urged Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian to consider Visakhapatnam for a chip design and manufacturing centre.
- With Google now producing its own chips for server operations, Andhra Pradesh’s tech infrastructure and skilled workforce make it an ideal location for such an investment.
- Petronas’ Green Energy Investment:
- Naidu met Muhammad Taufiq, President & CEO of Petronas, urging the Malaysian oil giant to invest in Andhra Pradesh’s petrochemical hub at Mulapeta.
- Petronas, aiming to produce 5 million tonnes of green ammonia by 2030, is planning a ₹15,000 crore investment in Kakinada to boost green hydrogen and renewable energy projects.
- PepsiCo’s Global Expansion Plans:
- Naidu held talks with Eugene Willemsen, CEO of Pepsi International Franchise Beverages, and Stephen Kehoe, Chairman of PepsiCo Foundation.
- He invited PepsiCo to make Visakhapatnam its global delivery centre and set up a PepsiCo Digital Hub.
- PepsiCo was also encouraged to establish a KurKure manufacturing unit and collaborate with Andhra Pradesh’s farmers for agricultural supply chain needs.
- Bahrain Investments:
- Naidu met Hamad Al Mahmeed from the Bahrain Prime Minister’s Office and Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, CEO of Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund.
- He highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s business-friendly policies and rapid industrial growth, inviting them to explore investment opportunities.
- Unilever’s ₹330 Crore Palm Oil Project:
- In discussions with Unilever Chief Supply Officer Willem Uijen, Naidu encouraged the company to set up a technology centre in Visakhapatnam.
- Unilever is reportedly considering a ₹330 crore investment in palm oil production in Andhra Pradesh.
- Green Energy & Sustainability Initiatives:
- Naidu sought support from Roberto Bocca, Head of the Centre for Energy and Materials (Cenmat) at WEF, to attract global investments in green hydrogen, battery storage, and solar manufacturing.
- With a strong focus on sustainability, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a leader in clean energy technologies and renewable resource management.
