Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company Biological E is expected to launch its COVID-19 vaccine ‘Corbevax’ by September-end in India, sources said on Monday. The vaccine being developed by Biological-E is a RBD protein sub-unit vaccine and recently underwent Phase-3 clinical trial after showing promising results in Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials.

Moving ahead with its mission to provide its citizens with safe, efficacious, affordable and accessible COVID-19 vaccine doses, the central government the Biological-E’s COVID vaccine has been supported by the government from preclinical stage to Phase-3 studies.

The Centre’s ‘Mission COVID Suraksha- the Indian COVID-19 Vaccine Development Mission’ is supporting the development of 5-6 COVID-19 vaccine candidates.

“Biological-E COVID Vaccine candidate has been supported by Government of India from Preclinical stage to Phase-3 studies. Department of Biotechnology has not only provided financial assistance in terms of grant-in-aid of over Rs 100 cr but has also partnered with Biological-E to conduct all animal challenge and assay studies through its Research Institute Translational Health Science Technology Institute (THSTI),” the Union ministry of health and family welfare had said.

Earlier this month, the government had informed the Rajya Sabha that four vaccine candidates are in the human trial stage and the one developed by Genique Life Sciences is in the advanced pre-clinical stage.

As per the Government’s written reply in the Upper House, the Biological E Ltd’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate is in phase three clinical trials, while Bharat Biotech International Ltd’s adeno intranasal vaccine candidate is also in phase three clinical trials.

Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd mRNA-vaccine candidate is in phase one clinical trial. Genique Life Sciences Pvt Ltd’s vaccine candidate is in the advanced pre-clinical stage.

Currently, Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V vaccine doses are being administered in India.
