The Harris County health agency in Texas announced the first fatality linked to the Omicron COVID-19 strain on Monday, a man who was unvaccinated.
According to ABC News, this is the first known recorded Omicron fatality in the United States. A request for comment from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was not immediately returned.

The victim, who was between the ages of 50 and 60, was at a higher risk of serious COVID-19 consequences since he was unvaccinated, according to the health authority.

The guy was the first local mortality from the variation, according to county judge Lina Hidalgo.

“Please – get vaccinated and boosted,” Hidalgo said.

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus accounts for 73% of US coronavirus infections based on sequencing data for the week ended December 18, the CDC said on Monday.

Earlier in December, Britain reported the first publicly confirmed death globally from Omicron. Twelve people in Britain have now died with the variant, and 104 are currently in hospital with it, Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab told Times Radio on Monday.
